Things To Do

New Farm and Edward Lodge

New Farm is an inner suburb of Brisbane, two kilometres east of the Brisbane CBDon a large bend of the Brisbane River. New Farm is famously known as Brisbane's "Little Italy" as many immigrants from Italian descent first settled in the suburb. This fact has contributed largely to the lifestyle and sophisticated ambience which is New farm today.

They say that position is everything and at Edward Lodge New Farm this could not be more true. We are ideally located if guests wish to go to the CBD. The beautiful smooth ride of the City Cats is an ideal way to get there, only one stop from Sydney Street Wharf. Ask our staff for directions on the 5 minute walk to get there. Another gem is the presence of Merthyr village just around the corner in Brunswick Street. A compact village shopping precinct where you can find some of the best eating places, coffee outlets and wine bars in the whole city of Brisbane and you can walk there! It is for these reasons that we claim Edward Lodge to be THE best positioned boutique hotel in new Farm.

A couple more practical matters about Brunswick Street and MerthyrVillage, you’ll find supermarkets, wine shops delicatessens, florists, hairdressers, green grocer, Massage therapists, beauty salons, post office and most major banks all within walking distance of Edward Lodge. We’ve dropped some selfies of local businesses on this page so you can check them out. If in doubt check with your hosts, they will certainly know where you can find goods and services.

A word about the buses.

Brunswick Street has buses which run frequently into the City of Brisbane. New Farm is very well served by the council bus system. There are 4 individual bus services all coming from and going to The City proper. Services are 195, 196, 197 and 199. Check with our staff for the latest timetables.

The marvellous New Farm Park

One of the true surprises of Brisbane is this riverside open space which covers approximately 18 hectares of land. Thousands of locals and visitors discover its charm very year. So don’t fight it, just go with the flowand join the band of new Farm Park denizens on any day of the week. It has many attractions beside its location on the bank of the Brisbane River. There are gardens and open parklands as well as wooded areas and lots of places to sit. There’s plenty of room for the kids to let off steam as they kick a football with dad after a Sunday picnic and shaded areas to sit, gaze at the water and just be. . A favourite area for bike riders too, New Farm Park can be almost all things to all people. Check it out while you are staying at Edward Lodge.

And while we are discussing New Farm Park it would be totally remiss not to mention its rather large neighbour now dubbed simply The Powerhouse.

Once the power station for the electric tramway, this building has had a major makeover and now has a second life as an Art Centre and an entertainment precinct. It is in the surrounds of The Powerhouse that visitors will find one of the highlights of Brisbane life – The Saturday Farmers Market held every second Saturday on the Powerhouse Plaza and Performance lawn. An institution of New Farm life, the Farmers Market is rewarding, busy and colourful and ALL ABOUT FOOD!

If its food and edible produce it’s almost certainly there, find your favourite artisan and ask about the products on offer, they’ll enjoy the discourse, you’ll learn some new things and buy some delicious things for a riverside picnic or tonight’s gourmet feast. This is something NOT to be missed.

Riding a bicycle is a wonderful pastime while you are visiting Brisbane in general and New Farm in particular. There is a particularly good ride around the area, in fact it can also be a good walk if you really don’t want hat hair!

Stop smiling, it’s good for you !
New Farm to Teneriffe

This trail is about 6 kilometres return and offers the opportunity to explore the century old New Farm Park (former convict farm and racecourse) as well as The Powerhouse and environs. Now the trail passes Cutters Landing in front of the sugar refinery apartments and then on to Teneriffe.

The ride begins at the Sydney Street Ferry wharf, head straight along the river, and watch for the where the path runs in front of houses and into Merthyr Park. When you get to the Merthyr Bowls Club enter Oxlade Drive then on to New Farm Park – this is where you get to choose the river(highly recommended) the rose garden or the playground. Whatever your choice move on and check out The Powerhouse, it’s an arts/entertainment precinct so there’s nearly always something happening

Come around the front of The Powerhouse and to enter Cutters Landing and the old CSR Refinery. The boardwalk to Teneriffe is interesting for its maritime history including a World War 2 submarine base. Once you reach the Teneriffe Wharf there’s a nearby café which may be welcome right now. . Remember Go Hard or Go Home and the further you ride the more you can eat later!
